Color! Create! Curtains!

Our living room is brown... very brown. Brown walls. Brown ceiling (which is gorgeous redwood). Brown furniture. BROWN. Blegh. Boring. Ok... I think you get it. ;)

When we moved in to our rental they provided us with curtains. Guess what they were... TAN (got ya, not)!

{See what I mean? Brown. And don't judge my un-staged space.}

I couldn't handle the brown anymore and neither could Kristyn (my sister in law). We chose a super fun pattern from JoAnn's (pretty much our only option out here) and got to work! I had fun teaching Kristyn a little and I think she had fun learning and doing.

FYI, this was done without a pattern and without technical perfection (including my night time photography with yucky lighting). <--- Story of my life right there...

I calculated the length on the curtains based on the ones that were already there. As far as width, typically when you buy fabric it is doubled on the bolt and I decided it would be wide enough just as it was. If you need it thiner, trim it. Wider, add fabric to one or both sides.

Supplies:
- 5 yards of fabric (liner and main curtain)
- thread that matches
- scissors
- rotary cutter and self healing board *optional*
- sewing machine
- an iron

{necessities}

Step 1: Measure and Cut
Measure the length of your windows then cut the fabric accordingly. Don't feel ridiculous measuring a bunch of times. You would rather be sure! Trust me. :) Keep in mind how you are hanging this will determine length (loops, grommets, pocket). I needed 6 extra inches to create my pocket (scroll down for more details). I chose to have a liner for I had to cut 4 pieces.

Step 2: Pin together.
Lay your fabric right sides together (the sides you want facing out). Then pin the 2 long sides and one of the short sides (you'll deal with the other one later). *Watch for crazy kitties trying to play with your fabric... see below*

{Mitzy, George, and Mojo were loving it! Kristyn and I eventually had to lock them out}

Step 3: Sew!
Sew your three straight lines. I don't have anything technical to say other than I had approx. 1/8-1/4 of an inch seem allowance and I just went straight. Let me know if you need more clarification.

Step 4: Iron.
Once done, turn inside out so the right side is now out. Iron to make your edges flat and not bubbled. Fold over and iron the unfinished edge to create a clean edge for your pocket.

Step 5: Creating a pocket.
Instead of making loops or grommets to hang the curtains, I chose to make a pocket. To make a pocket, fold over the unfinished edge (that you just ironed). If you have a slick fabric you really should pin it, if it's cotton or something similar I'm going to say the wrong thing which is "You don't have to pin it". In my experience, I can keep it straight enough and the fabric kinda sticks to itself. Anyway, sew your straight line to the end.

Step 6: Hang those suckers up!
Go on... hang them up and enjoy!

{I didn't stage it... again. Welcome to my living room}

{I love this fabric!!!!}

There you have it. The quick, nontechnical way, without a pattern how-to on making curtains! Let me know if you give it a try.

If you need extra direction, I can help! Just let me know.

What have you created lately?
Other than the curtains? Not much. This needs to change.

What are you looking forward to creating?
I am making a duvet cover out of sheets next!

Sassy Keys

Just like any other house, ours require keys to get in. I was having trouble telling them apart and was irritated when I grabbed the wrong key  decided I needed to do some thing to distinguish between them. So, naturally, I grabbed my new house keys and some nail polish. This is a super easy and personalized way to mark keys. The photos are pretty explanatory.

{grab your keys and choose your colors}

 {i did 2-3 coats of polish depending on the color}

 {i love glitter so i added it to one side of each key}

{attach to your key chain and enjoy}

What colors would you choose?

Leona Valley Community Queens Pageant

This is a very very very late post... But if you follow me on FB then you know I've been crazy busy moving and finding a place to live (yes, in that order). And now life is full of wedding preparations for my brother's wedding in just 10 days!

In October 2012, I was contacted about restarting the Leona Valley Community Queens Program. It's a great program for young women in Leona Valley. It's all about community service, grace, poise and who will be the best ambassador for the community. I was Miss Leona Valley 2005 so, I know all about it (and I had a great helper). I was very excited and honored to be asked. It was such a good time working toward the day of the pageant and encouraging the contestants.

Christie Klein and Rachel Bartfai ran for Miss Leona Valley. Olivia Bosma ran for Jr. Miss Leona Valley. Follow to the end to see who won! Enjoy the photos!

High Five for Friday

I'm linking up with Lauren (formerly, from my grey desk).

One. Spring.
Here in Eureka there are trees where instead of petals falling off of the flower,
it's the bloom! Crazy! What are these called?

{so romantic.}

{not sure what this bloom is. cherry or pear?}

Two. Coffee.
This town (these towns, multiple small ones) has awesome coffee!!
Mike and I are hooked. If you love coffee, please come visit us and we will introduce you.

{oh, coffee. I love you.}

Three. Cute days!
I love when I have a cute day. It's encouraging. It should also be noted that
I only brought 2 t-shirts, 1 sweater, 1 long sleeved shirt, 1 cardigan, 2 tank tops, 1 pair of yoga pants, 1 pair of leggings, a set of PJs, 2 sweat shirts,
2 scarfs and the necessary under things for the clothing brought up here.
I am only up here for 3 weeks. I have done laundry 3 times.
My weakness is shoes. Please don't ask how many I brought.

{i love this attire. I'm glad this is going to be an everyday look for me.}

Four. Hiking Boots.
Speaking of shoes... I left my tennis shoes at home on purpose accident. So, I had to buy hiking boots. Oh my goodness. These are great! Good ankle support. Great traction. COMFORTABLE. While I was trying on another pair I kept one of these shoes on to compare. After I walked around the store a little bit I got to thinking, "Which shoe is on my left foot?... I guess that's the sign for which one I'm getting". Yes, they were that comfy.
I'm glad to have a pair boots to take me hiking.

{hiking boots. many adventures shall be had and much shape shall I get into.}

 {redwoods. they're tall.}

 {fallen trees.}

 {Hubby and I call this "the love nest"... Not because of us,
it just seems like it would be a good one. it's all hollowed out....}

{I love this photo.}

Five. Bridal Showers.
I co-hosted a bridal shower on Saturday for my future sis-in-law. I love Kristyn. She is a great girl, loves Jesus and is such a blessing.
We had such a fun day of games, good food, friends and blessings!

{the only picture I got from the bridal shower. i'm bad at the photo part.}

{pin wheel. crafting for the shower.}

How was your week?
What are your weekend plans?
